Age

It seems that thoughts have drifted back to time-albeit from yet another perspective.  As time does go by, all things age…

and often need additional support in order to avoid complete collapse.

As with all things living, though, time does eventually run out.  A life well-lived is one with many rich and varied experiences.

However, sometimes age plays a minor role as a greater force than time brings haste to the process: for example, disease, war, and civil unrest take their toll.  Ebola, Ferguson, Iraq, Cleveland, and Afghanistan all come immediately to mind when thinking about premature ends.  Here in the 21st century it is stunning that poverty and race and ethnicity continue to be such divisive factors in societies around the world.  Access to clean drinking water is arguably the greatest health threat around the world.  Drugs for diseases that primarily affected poor countries were seen as not a viable investment for major drug manufacturers.  That is, of course, until Ebola and the global transit system appeared to put more developed countries at risk (and I hesitate to use that term as the U.S. and other developed countries have the resources that greatly reduce the risk of the kind of outbreaks seen in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.  Indeed, that is the point-resources make a difference).  Race and ethnicity appear to have been flashpoints almost for as long as homo sapiens have walked the earth: Rwanda, the Balkans, Darfur, Central African Republic, Iraq, etc. etc. etc. and that is just in the last 20 years.  That list is far too long.  And yes, Ferguson is in the United States.

As an added comment to the situation in Ferguson, it is ironic that in the days leading up to the Grand Jury decision, gun sales increased in advance of the anticipated violence.  This appears to be how it goes-gunfire is at the center of the controversy and that begets the potential for more gunfire.

It does not have to be this way.  In this season of thanksgiving, please do put something toward the development of community.  The act of giving of oneself is working toward the greater good and it just seems so sad to think that ending poverty and prejudice and discrimination is but a dream.  It does not have to be this way.

Three Days

November 26, 2014

Day before Thanksgiving snowstorm.

The Mid-Atlantic states have had a roller-coaster of weather over the past three days.  Today, it is snowing with the prediction of 4-6 inches by nightfall.  This is nothing like what hit the Buffalo, New York area recently, and we are moving in the opposite direction with regard to temperature.

Yesterday, it was in the 70s and nicely sunny.

The day before that, it was a little cooler, but still quite nice.

Happy White Thanksgiving, which is a bit odd to say, to all who celebrate.

Take care.

Time Re-visited

The flip side of the previous post is that with time comes a beauty and elegance all its own.

This is also the 200th post for this blog.  Thanks to all of you who have read these posts over the years.

Take care.

Time Continues

It is difficult to logically justify this current fixation/preoccupation with time.

Perhaps it is because the House just voted to approve the Keystone XL pipeline and that Mary Landrieu has lobbied for the Senate to do the same.  Maybe it is because the Allman Brothers Band gave their final concert toward the end of last month.  It might be because the end of this semester is rapidly approaching.

The roses above were once soft and brilliant and are now brittle and aged.

Time can take its toll…

Take care.

Yet Another Measure of Time

April 13, 2014 original remnants of a plastic bag in a tree

A previous post discussed various ways of measuring time-this is but one more. The photograph above was made on April 13, 2014 and what initially caught my eye was the size of the plastic bag captured by a tree alongside a busy highway.

I drive past this area on nearly a daily basis and so it was (somewhat) convenient to make another photograph of the same bag on April 24, 2014…

Time and wind have certainly led to the shredding of the bag, but it has remained remarkably resilient given the elements to which it has been exposed during the 7 months in which the photographs were made.  This is not to be taken as an endorsement of the durability of the product.  To the contrary, this is an indictment of the longevity of this material as this is one of the many reasons plastic bags pose an environmental hazard.

This article from the BBC a couple of years ago details a few of the issues involving plastic bags and what several countries have done to deal with the problem.  It is important that this particular article goes a bit further and also addresses the issue of the carbon footprint created by using plastic bags as well as many of the popular alternatives.

Choose wisely.

Take care.

Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day in the U.S.  In Canada, today is referred to as Remembrance Day.

It is important to remember the veterans and their service.

As it turns out, they were mostly correct.

Time will now tell about the longer-term impact of the 2014 mid-term elections in the United States.
