July 4th

Today is the Fourth of July and it is the day when Americans celebrate their independence from Great Britain.  This remarkable act of collective individuation was put to paper with the writing of the Declaration of Independence, which was formally presented on July 4th, 1776.  Yesterday, the Diane Rehm show re-broadcast this interview with Dr. Danielle Allen, which includes a reading of the document and a discussion of significant details regarding its history and current interpretations.  It is well worth a listen.

For many, this holiday is a time to travel.  AAA predicted that more than 41 million Americans would take a trip this weekend.  According to this article, a stronger economy and lower gasoline prices are fuelling this increase. (The pun is intended.  Yes, it is also pretty lame.)

Safe travels to all who are out-and-about.

Take care.

  1. Thanks for the post as usual and Happy 4th of July.
Talking of traveling, you should do a piece on road rage that comes with it.
Over the day from yesterday I have personally experienced 2 separate incidents of road rage and coincidentally it was by someone behind me who, in both incidents thought I was taking so long yielding to the cars on the main highway while joining it from a minor road.(One actually blew the horn over almost a minute before swerving in front of me and braking)
So much rush to perhaps get to their destinations on time at the expense of their own safety and other travelers.
    Take care!
