The ability to create such imagery without the use of toxic chemicals was one of the real pulls that led me to move from shooting film to shooting digital.  Having said that, though, there really is nothing in the digital world that compares to seeing an image materialize as the paper was being “processed” in the developing tray.  That was truly magical and I am glad to have had the experience.

Take care.

Birds

From the very beginning, I knew I was not going to be a bird photographer.  The necessary equipment to do that type of photography to a high standard is generally too big, too heavy, and, most importantly, too expensive.  The fact that I cannot photograph them as I might like in no way diminishes my enjoyment of watching and hearing them.  There is something quite soothing about standing in the back yard and listening to the geese overhead as they move along on their migrations.  It is easy to hear the vocalizations, and, at times, they are close enough to also hear the flapping of their wings.

And those migrations are no small feat.  Please give a listen to this episode of Fresh Air as Terry Gross interviews Gerrit Vyn and Scott Weidensaul about the sounds and journeys that birds make.

Given that we have entered the Anthropocene (“human centered”) Era, and what Elizabeth Kolbert refers to as the “Sixth Extinction”, many bird species are in danger of disappearing due to the effects of climate change and the built environment.  That point is also made clear in the above discussion with Mr. Vyn and Mr. Weidensaul.

While this post is focused on the impact that human-generated climate change and infrastructure are having on birds, it is very, very important to remember that as other species die off, it becomes more and more difficult for humans to survive.  Such difficulties are also already occurring.

A lot of this is within our control as, after all, these are human-centered impacts.

Think about that.

Take care.

Which Way to Go?

This photograph represents all that I find pleasurable about BW photography-it contains the full range of tones from black, through the greys, to white.  The direct sunlight coming from camera right is responsible for the crisply defined, dark shadows and the very bright, white doors and covered windows.  It is that same combination of shadow and highlight that so readily defines the texture of the wall and stairs as well.  It is because of those factors that I had made the decision to convert this image to BW even before the shutter was pressed.

Speaking of choices, Yogi Berra, may he rest in peace, once said “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.”  This particular fork may still be laying there…

Another Walk

This time, it was a walk around Devil’s Den in Gettysburg, PA.  These rocks were the sight of horrific fighting on July 2, 1863, which was part of the American Civil War.  Given that yesterday was a beautiful, if a bit chilly, fall day, there were many other visitors clambering about the rocks.  Included in the crowd were several young boys, some of whom had replica Civil War-era toy muskets-most likely purchased at one of the many gift shops in the town proper.  Seeing them playfully scamper about provided about as much contrast as one could possibly imagine with what actually happened here while using real guns with real intent.

It was such a crisp and relatively quiet day that it was indeed difficult to imagine the fighting that took place here.  The grasses in the field next to the rocks seemed to have right idea, though.  As the fighting progressed that day, any one standing straight and tall in the open would surely not have stood for long.

Devil’s Den, and the entirety of the battlefield for that matter, is a place that never fails to impress when one knows the history.

Take care.

A Walk

Walking the same route to a familiar place becomes exactly that-familiar.  Sometimes it is worth varying the route.  This is a photo essay of walk down an unfamiliar, narrow, side street on a wonderful fall day.

Look Up

Watch people walking around while texting or playing or watching something on their cell phones-the stimulation draws the user’s attention downward.  It pays to look upward, at least once in a while, as there are interesting details to be found above one’s head.

Take care.
