Another Walk

This time, it was a walk around Devil’s Den in Gettysburg, PA.  These rocks were the sight of horrific fighting on July 2, 1863, which was part of the American Civil War.  Given that yesterday was a beautiful, if a bit chilly, fall day, there were many other visitors clambering about the rocks.  Included in the crowd were several young boys, some of whom had replica Civil War-era toy muskets-most likely purchased at one of the many gift shops in the town proper.  Seeing them playfully scamper about provided about as much contrast as one could possibly imagine with what actually happened here while using real guns with real intent.

It was such a crisp and relatively quiet day that it was indeed difficult to imagine the fighting that took place here.  The grasses in the field next to the rocks seemed to have right idea, though.  As the fighting progressed that day, any one standing straight and tall in the open would surely not have stood for long.

Devil’s Den, and the entirety of the battlefield for that matter, is a place that never fails to impress when one knows the history.

Take care.
