The thermometer in my vehicle registered 71 degrees this afternoon as I left work.  The temperatures at both Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport set records.

While that was happening in this section of the Mid-Atlantic, tornadoes tore up parts of the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas of Louisiana yesterday.  As my work colleague pointed out, one aspect of the heartbreak of this are the empty lots that still permeate the 9th Ward in New Orleans as shown in the aerial imagery-many of these are a legacy of the damage wrought by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The forecast for tonight into tomorrow morning for the Baltimore-Washington area is rain turning into snow.  Accumulation amounts vary-less in the downtown areas and more to the north and west of the cities.  Temperatures return to the 50s Saturday.

Take care.

UPDATE:  I added the second photo-this is a set of steps that remain in a vacant lot in the 9th Ward.  This photograph was made in 2008, and some of the re-built homes can be seen in the background.
