How much more of an effort would it take to walk the cart back to the store?

There certainly are some circumstances under which it would, indeed, create a bit of hardship making the return trip.  At the same time, anecdotally, folks seen leaving carts in such places often appear to be fully capable of doing so.  It is interesting how some develop the attitude that it is OK to leave items behind.  Perhaps the thought is that someone else will come and get the carts, as happens with some stores.  Or perhaps the thought is, “it takes too much time to return the cart”.  Maybe there is no thought at all.

It is much harder to imagine a justification for leaving trash behind-especially when it is not just casually dropped, but apparently placed where it has been left…

Take care.
